  • A combination of personal vetting via analyzing output and the vetting of others. For instance, the Pentium calculation error was in the news. Otherwise, calculation by computer processor is understood and the technology is acceptable to be used for cases involving human lives.

In contrast, there are several documented cases where LLM’s have been incorrect in the news to a point where I don’t need personal vetting. No one is anywhere close to stating that LLM’s can be used in cases involving human lives.

  • I mentioned increased density as a reason why landowners may choose vacation rental over housing. The total habitable building supply can’t increase and it becomes more profitable to be a hotel than an apartment building.

I feel a problem for Europe is that most of their tourism centers are centered in old cultural centers. For instance, Amsterdam became a major party city in its historic downtown. In contrast, American cities like Miami and Las Vegas were built from scratch to serve that function.

Out of curiosity, are holiday rentals the major issue?

They can be, especially in Europe where a lot of the hotspots for tourism are in our near the historic cores of cities. It gets made worse as historic ordinances limit construction of taller buildings which could accommodate increased tourism or there is rent control for housing but no equivalent limit for hotel stays.

Overtourism is a documented problem which can drastically change the character of a place.

  • Yeah, I wouldn’t consider this a sign of recession. Instead, it is the confluence of various structural changes in the industry.

    1. Because the industry was forced to work in a distributed manner, it has removed the location premium in a lot of salaries. Companies are firing high cost of living areas and hiring in lower cost of living areas.

    2. Outside of cost of living, total supply for developers has increased significantly.

    3. The return on investment for software development has either dropped or are starting to be included in more decisions. This is leading to development budgets getting slashed.
